JUST BEGIN

Whenever I'm in doubt about whether to do something now or later, I ask myself, "If not now, when?"

If I can think of another time that's really better, I write it down.

If I can't name a better time than the present, I diagnose it as a case of self-deception and condemn myself to immediate performance.

I had a saintly old friend in Lawrence, Kansas, named Sam Elliott. Sam managed to do a countless number of things every day for many people.

His favorite phrase was, "Just Begin."

"Nothing," he said, "is ever begun until we begin, and nothing gets started until it's begun."

Many people die of Analysis Paralysis. Like Aesop's fabled donkey, they starve to death between two bales of hay, pondering which to eat first.

A motto that occupies a prominent place in my office is, "Do the thing you have to do when you have to do it - whether you feel like it or not."

I hate this motto, but it has prodded me to action when there might have been delay.

- Dr. Dale E. Turner
